As a Southern California wedding photographer, one of the most stressful times during a wedding can be the wedding family photos! I have many tips for how to create the best experience for you and your partner on your wedding day! My number one goal is to help you not feel rushed or chaotic during this time. Keep reading to find out how to have smooth family pictures on your wedding day.
Tips for Smooth Wedding Family Photos
My first tip, is to tell your family beforehand that they are going to be apart of family portraits during your wedding day. It’s a bonus if you can let them know when to expect to be pulled away for this as well! If pictures are happening before the ceremony, tell them to arrive 10-15 minutes early to ensure we start on time. If your timeline had your wedding family photos taking place after the ceremony, let them know to hang around after the ceremony is over and not venture to cocktail hour just yet!
My next tip kind goes along with the first one. Make sure to incorporate an announcement before everyone disperses after the ceremony! If your family pictures are happening after the ceremony – have the officiant announce for family to stay behind when dismissing guests to cocktail hour. This way we don’t have to go around trying to find everyone! It’s definitely an extra safety to make sure everyone is there when the time comes for their family photo.
Lastly, and maybe the most important, make a list! We want to make sure you get all the combinations you want and you do not have to worry about getting certain pictures day of. This also helps the family portrait time go by quickly and smoothly. Also, assign someone to help with family portraits, since we usually don’t know who everyone is. This will help on the day of your wedding to have a full list prepared for us to reference!
