When most couples think about the end of their wedding day, they imagine a grand exit—sparklers flying, guests cheering, maybe even a vintage car waiting outside. But there’s one beautiful, often overlooked moment that many couples are starting to include: a private last dance.
It’s a quiet moment, just the two of you. No guests. No distractions. Just music, soft lighting, and the chance to soak in the final minutes of your wedding day.
As a Southern California Wedding Photographer, I often photograph weddings at the Homestead, a beautiful venue nestled in the hills of the San Bernardino mountains. The majority of my weddings at this gorgeous venue end in a private last dance. Your wedding day is filled with breathtaking views, joyful laughter, and unforgettable moments—but it all goes by so fast. I always encourage my couples to slow down and savor the day, whether that is taking a moment to step back and enjoy, or having that private last dance.

What Is a Private Last Dance?
A private last dance happens after the reception is over—guests have stepped outside for the grand exit, or they’ve started to make their way home. Inside the now-empty reception space, the newlyweds share one final dance together, alone.
At The Homestead, this moment is quiet and romantic, under the starry sky, with the glow of string lights. It’s quiet, intimate, and completely yours.
From a photography standpoint, these moments are gold. Whether you’re dancing under the stars at The Homestead’s barn or sharing a slow dance in the open-air courtyard, the photos from your last dance often capture the rawest emotions of the entire day—love, joy, and the bliss of being newlyweds.

How to Plan Your Private Last Dance at The Homestead
The Homestead’s staff is very accommodating, making it easy to add this moment to your timeline. Here’s how to do it:
- Talk to your DJ or band. Ask them to play one last song after the guests have cleared out.
- Coordinate with your planner. They’ll help transition guests outside smoothly so you can have privacy.
- Let your photographer know. I can quietly document your last dance or step out to give you total privacy—whatever you prefer.
- Choose a meaningful song. It can be your first dance song again, or something that speaks to this new chapter.
